Waiheke Island is one of the jewels of the Hauraki Gulf. Just a 40-minute ferry ride from the hustle and bustle of downtown Auckland, the island offers a picturesque blend of farmland, forest, beaches, vineyards and olive groves.
Waiheke became established from the early 1980’s for the production of high-quality red wines based on Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot and Cabernet Franc. It has since expanded to include Syrah, Chardonnay, and other varietals that perform particularly well in the warm, dry summer climate and stony soils of the island.
Today, winegrowing and wine tourism are the principal drivers of the island’s economy. There are around 23 cellar doors or tasting rooms located on the island and the Wine Underground map gives you an indication of where those cellar doors/tasting rooms are.
It’s fun, great looking and wonderfully informative.
