Central Otago is the most southerly wine region in the world. Located at a latitude of 45º South, it is the only area in New Zealand with a semi-continental climate. Nowhere else in the country experiences a greater daily and seasonal extremes of temperature.

Central Otago is a rapidly developing wine region with a well-established international reputation. The Otago wine region is New Zealand’s seventh largest.  The region is also home to New Zealand’s premier tourist destination – Queenstown.

The wine industry started in Central Otago in 1864 and is now home to over 1,900 hectares of vineyards which make up over 8% of total vineyard area in the country. Pinot Noir is the dominant grape variety with most plantings in Cromwell around Lake Dunstan. Central Otago is comprised of four distinct sub-regions, separated by mountains and deep gorges:

  • The Cromwell Basin includes Bannockburn in the south, Lowburn, Pisa and Bendigo to the North.
  • Gibbston.
  • Clyde and Alexandra.
  • Wanaka.
