The Auckland wine growing region is a large, important and very diverse region.
Auckland’s winemaking history began in the western suburbs of the city. For many years, Henderson was the commercial hub of the New Zealand wine industry, with the oldest winery being established in 1902. As urbanisation took hold, it migrated North towards, Kumeu, Matakana and Warkworth, and the South around Clevedon and Whitford.
Auckland’s warmth and fertile soils are perfect for producing full-flavoured red wines such as Cabernet sauvignon and Merlot. White grape varieties such as Viognier, Pinot Gris and world-class chardonnay also do well. The common factors of volcanic, clay-rich soils and a temperate maritime climate allow it to produce exciting, high-quality wines over its length and breadth.
Today, as urbanisation makes the land too valuable for vineyards a large concentration of wineries moved to the outskirts of the city. However, many great wineries are still within an hour’s drive of the city centre.
While Auckland’s current acreage is considerably smaller, producing only 0.3% of the country’s output of grapes. The presence of large wine companies in such proximity to NZ’s largest, most economically important city makes it a region of significant importance.
It’s fun, great looking and wonderfully informative. A very cool way to explore New Zealand’s ten wine growing districts.
